In a few weeks, I will turn 60.  This milestone has occasioned me to reflect, and the touchstone I return to again and again is how thoroughly I have been blessed. 

I want to do something special to mark my birthday, and, having already been blessed, I want to direct this outward. So I’ve decided to engage with Ten Gav on a dedicated campaign to buy at least 60 beds. I’m asking for your help.

For those of you unfamiliar with Ten Gav, it is a great organization that works to help fill the gaps in the assistance available to needy people in Israel.  Social workers apply to the organization on behalf of their clients who have verifiable needs not addressed by other sources.  This allows donors to make a material difference towards a specific need for a designated individual – 100% of the donation goes specifically to the case the donor selects.  Often, the needs are for an object that will markedly improve the recipient’s quality of life, such as a working refrigerator.  Or a bed.

I have become sensitive to the importance of a good night’s sleep, and how much it can contribute to productivity, resilience, and a sense of well-being.  That there are kids going off to school every morning, or heads of household trying to earn a living, but with the handicap of not even having had a chance at good sleep because their family circumstances are such that they don’t have a proper bed – well, that’s just not right.

So let’s do something about it.

I’m giving ₪60,000 – half the minimum amount we are trying to raise.

Ten Gav works with its social service partners and is gathering a list of people who have a verified need of a bed and no realistic chance of getting one absent charitable intervention.
