Profile of a New Agency: The Department of Social Services - The Bukhari Neighborhood

This department of social services works in several neighborhoods in Jerusalem: The Bukharim, Me’ah She’arim, Beit Yisrael, Morasha, Hachoma Hashlishit, and the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

The geographic spread of these neighborhoods reflects a broad and varied population that is receiving these services.

In 2021 the department assisted 1,010 households, among them 553 individuals with no family support and 457 elderly households.

Most of the department's clients live a Chareidi lifestyle. Still, the mix within this population ranges from Lita’im to Chassidim, to Baalei Teshuva - from those who recognize the State to those who live a much more closed lifestyle. What they have in common is their poverty.

The department provides services in 3 main areas:

  • families and individuals dealing with poverty and social isolation

  • helping the elderly and their families

  • families in crisis and at-risk

One of their social workers has written to us:

“One of the main requests we get is to provide bunk beds that open up with two additional beds (so four beds in total). Many of our families have many children and live in very small units. These beds enable each child to get a place of his/her own and still allow the family to maintain their ‘communal’ space.

Our experience working with Ten Gav is that of working with partners - you provide help in a respectful manner that acknowledges the unique feature of our clientele, and that is fast. In addition, Ten Gav provides give quality products. This help impacts the emotional state of mind of our clients, and the responses we have had from them since we started working with you in the past half year have been very moving, and for that, we thank you.”
